早期バイリンガル教育のメリットって？
今、子育て中の方やこれから子供を育てる方であれば、英語教育に興味がある方も多いのではないでしょうか？
英語は大人になってからも学ぶこともできますが、できれば子供の頃から学ばせておきたい。早くから学ばせておくとメリットがたくさんあります。
例えば、単語を覚える負担が軽減されます。これは本当に大きい！
語学の勉強は単語を覚えるのに本当に時間がかかります。
大学受験で必要とされる単語数は5,000語程度と言われています。
これを中学生から始めたとしたら、6年間で5,000語を覚える場合、年間833語ほど覚えることになります。
もし小さい頃から英語に触れておけば、18歳までに年間たったの300語弱程度の単語を覚えるだけで5,000語を覚えられるわけです。
こんなにきれいに物事が進むわけではないですし、単語以外にもしないといけないこともあります。それでも早期に英語学習を進めることは悪いことではなさそうです。
それでは早期の英語教育は良いこと尽くめかと言われると、そういうわけではありません。
バイリンガル教育の大きな落とし穴に「セミリンガル」になってしまう可能性があります。
セミリンガルって何？
「セミリンガル」って何？となっている方も多いと思います。
セミリンガルとは２言語以上を会話レベルで話すことはできるけれども、どの言語においても年相応の教育に必要な言語能力が備わっていないことを言います。
ざっくりいうと、話せるけど、学校で授業についていけるだけの言葉の力がないってことです。
これってものすごく怖くないですか？
授業を受けていても、先生が言っていることがどの言語であってもわからない。
こんな状態で成長していけば、無力感にとらわれた状態で日々の生活を送らなければなりません。これから長い人生が待っている子供のためにも、この問題はなんとかして回避しなければなりません。
とりあえずインターナショナルスクールに通わせていけば、どうにかなるでしょ。
海外転勤になったから、子供は勝手に現地の言語を習得するだろう。
毎日英語を聞かせていれば、そのうち話すようになるだろう。
確かにある程度、第２言語を話せるようになるかもしれません。
でも親の言語に対する戦略のなさによって、生きていく上で必要な言語能力の機会を奪ってしまうことになってしまうかもしれません。
そこで今回はバイリンガル教育の是非と言語戦略について話しましょう！

Discussion Topic
I’m sure a lot of parents are interested in raising their children to be bilingual.
But oftentimes they don’t really know how.
Today I would like to share with you several popular methods used by parents who actually raised their kids to be bilingual.
We should also talk about whether bilingual education should be encouraged or not because a lot of parents are concerned about whether it has a negative impact on children’s development.
The first method to discuss is something called OPOL, which is short for One Parent One Language, also known as One Person One Language.
This basically means that either father or mother speaks the target foreign language and the other speaks another language, oftentimes it’s your mother tongue, or it could be a dominant language spoken in the area you live in.
If you actually want to use this method,
how do you get your children to learn that target language?
What are some of the difficulties you might face?
The second method is the minority language at home.
This means that you and your spouse use a target language at home so your children can learn that language.
But, is this based on the idea
that parents have to be fluent in that language?
Language plays a very important role in expressing your emotions and if both parents are not fluent in the target language, this might not be as feasible as the first method, in my opinion. Let me hear your opinions on this one.
And the third method is immersion.
This means that your children are exposed to a target language.
Again feasibility is the question here. I mean,
Is it really possible if you live in Japan?
It looks like the only way for Japanese parents to do this is to send your children to international school.
So far I listed up 3 popular ways to raise a bilingual kid but we should also talk about whether bilingual education at an early stage in life is really necessary or not.
The Fear of Semilingualism:
Should we really provide bilingual education?
Maybe there are some negative consequences because of this type of education. Maybe not. But it’s worth a discussion.
