英語が話せるようになるために大切なことは？アウトプット力を高めるためにインプットを鍛えよう！

こんにちは！福島英語塾の犬伏です。
ちょっと込み入った話になると途端に話せなくなることってありませんか？
これって英語に限ったことではなく、日本語でも同じですね。
言葉を話すというのは、単純に知っている単語を使うということではなく、話す内容に関して情報を持っていることが大切です。現実的に英語を話そうと思ったら、英語の世界で情報収集をしなければなりません。
こういうと「やっぱり海外に行って英語を勉強しないと英語は話せるようにならないのか」と思うかもしれません。しかし、何も「英語に触れる」＝「海外へ行って勉強する」ではありません。日本国内にいても、英語の本を読んだり、映画を見たり、今はYouTubeで情報を得ることもできますね。たくさんの情報を国内で手に入れることができるのです。
福島英語塾が主催する「Eigoでディスカッション」は
「自己紹介や趣味の話はもうしない！一歩踏み込んだ英会話」
をモットーにしていますが、実際に話すのは総合的な英語学習の一部でしかありません。
ディスカッションイベントでアウトプットの場所を確保し、その場で自分が勉強してきたことを披露する。そんな場所として捉えると、ディスカッションを中心とした総合的な勉強が可能となります。
じゃあ、何をすれば良いの？
まずはお題を確認してみましょう！
お題サンプル：
Now all the countries in the world except the U.S., Myanmar and Liberia use the metric system. The metric system is to use a measurement unit such as meter for length, gram for weight, and liter for capacity. The United States and the other two countries use the U.S. customary system such as inch, yard, and mile for length, ounce and pound for weight and pint, gallon and barrel for capacity. These differences are confusing! Should the U.S. switch to the metric system?
（現在、アメリカ、ミャンマー、リベリアを除く全ての国でメートル法を採用しています。メートル法とは長さにメートル、重さにグラム、容量にリットルを使うような測定の単位を使うことです。アメリカ、ミャンマー、リベリアは長さにインチやヤード、マイル、重さにオンスやポンド、容量にパイントやガロン、バレルといった米国慣用単位を使っています。このような違いは混乱を招きます。アメリカはメートル法に変えた方が良いと思いますか？）
このお題を読むこともリーディングの練習になりますね。最終目標はこのお題を口頭で出されたら、その場ですぐに考えをまとめて答えるということです。では、最終目標から逆算してどんなステップが必要か確認してみましょう！
最終目標は「口頭で質問された内容に対して、すぐに答える！」

このように一歩踏み込んだ内容の英会話では、総合的な勉強をしていないと実際にスピーキング力を発揮することはできません。
今回は一例として、上記のトピックを実際話せるようになるために、お手本のライティングをお見せします。実際ネイティブスピーカーがどんな言葉を使っているのか、どんな文法を使っているのか、そういう部分をしっかりと確認することができれば、自分の話す英語にも還元できるはずです。

I support the idea of the U.S. abandoning the Imperial System. It is simply outdated. The only reason it is still around is because big businesses do not want to spend the time and money changing the infrastructure of American business and products. Citizens also tend to oppose the change due to having an excessive amount of pride in the idea of the United States being a world leader. Still considering all the issues with using a system that basically only the U.S. relies on causes a lot of extra funds and time just the same.
For one thing, it costs money to make U.S. products for other countries have the correct measurements for that particular country. What good is a gauge that only gives miles in your car and you are trying to sell it to the Japanese? How are we supposed to sell products in another country if all of our products are oversized due to being in gallon form? That means we have to make two versions of each item we create, a U.S. and international version.
Also can we honestly say that the U.S. is a world leader at this point? The U.S. has lost so much of the credibility we once had amongst the international community it’s embarrassing to even admit that I am an American. How many more nonsensical statements by our President need to be made, and how many more innocent people need to die at the hands of an outdated Amendment that was meant for people living in a different time? I wouldn’t dare call the United States a world leader anymore and I am fine with that.
We stand to benefit far more by working with others and going with the flow in this case. Saying we do not have enough money and time to change the system is nonsense. Thankfully though both systems are taught in schools in the United States, the content is easily forgotten due to lack of usage and context. The United States, at this point, is unlikely to abandon the system officially any time soon.

理想的にはリーディングで情報収集をして、関連動画でさらに情報を集め、自分の考えをライティングでまとめていくことができれば、総合的な英語学習ができます。
でもまずはできることからコツコツとやっていきましょう。コツコツやればできる範囲が広がって、リーディングだけではなく、リスニングやライティングの練習にも時間が割けるようになります。できることの範囲が広がるほどに英語力も上がっていくでしょう！
